In this Globalization Era, many new ideas that come out from the intellectuals. One of that many new ideas is Global Citizenship. Global citizenship can be define by two words, “Global” and “Citizenship”. According to Wikipedia, The term “Citizenship” refers to an identity between a person and a city, state or nation and their right to work, live and participate politically in a particular geographic area. When combined with the term “Global” which According to Merriam Webster online dictionary is a term refers to involving the entire world. So we can conclude that Global Citizenship is an idea that transcends geography or political borders between humans in this world.

All ideas have pro and cons, but I basically disagree with this idea. But however, the process of Global Citizenship had already started with Globalization was materialized.

The idea of Global Citizenship suggest that humans in this world has no border to each other—which is what Globalization offers in this era. Because of Globalization, we can communicate and get information easier than when it was in previous eras. In this era, we can get information from another nation across the sea and continent just with a blink of eyes. So do communication. We can know how well are another nation’s condition, and we can do something if it’s bad. Just like there isn’t any border between us. Get the point?

I disagree with this idea because although Global Citizenship has a good point –in humanity and a sense of concern by people- Global Citizenship has a bad point and it’s very important point.

It’s about the identity of a nation.

Every nation has their own unique that can’t be bother by anything. But well, it’s in the past. So maybe I have to talk it with past tense—that every nation had their own unique that couldn’t be bother by anything. It sounds better.

Global Citizenship offers something that would blur the identity –the local unique- and Globalization is one of ways that will make it true. With Globalization, All information about another nation’s culture will enter our nation. And most of teenagers in our nation take that information without any filters. So what will happen? Our culture will be being forgotten.

That’s reality what happens in our nation today. Teenagers thinks that another nation’s culture is a way better than ours. So they eventually don’t concern about their own nation culture.

Our local wisdom, local unique will disappear and be forgotten.

And by disagree about Global Citizenship doesn’t mean I despise it. Idea about Global Citizenship is so beautiful. Can you imagine that human concern about the others because we don’t have any border? It do sounds beautiful. Respect about other human being is what this generation lacks of. So, this idea gives us hopes of humanity.

So can we make this idea better?

Global Citizenship will be better if we still rooted in our local wisdom, our local culture and our local unique, but we globally respect each other as the same human being.

We can do this because as a college student, we are the agent of change. Are you ready?
